一、调查目的
中国高职高专学生的英语水平究竟如何?词汇量究竟有多少?是否一份词汇测试卷就可以测试出该生的英语水平?本研究的词汇量调查有三个内容：
1 该高职高专院校新生的整体英语词汇水平处于什么阶段?
2 该词汇测试试卷是否能有效地反映学生的英语水平?
3 该词汇卷是否能有效地用于高职高专院校新生入学分班?
二、调查概况
(一)测试样本
将测试样本分成两组，第一组参加词汇前测，第二组参加词汇测试。
1 在词汇前测中，共随机抽取118名非英语专业的学生参加，他们都是2006年统招录取的某学院的新生。其中，47名学生来自商贸系(文科)，41名学生来自护理系(文科)，30名学生来自汽车系(理科)；2，在词汇测试中，共随机抽取129名非英语专业的学生参加，他们也是2006年统招录取某学院的新生。其中专科生包括：27名经济管理系(文科)学生，22名艺术系(艺术类)学生，28名汽车系(理科)学生；本科生包括：17名计算机系(理科)学生，35名机械系(理科)学生。
(二)测试工具
本次测试采用了两套试卷，一份为笔者自制的词汇测试卷，一份为当年的期末考试卷。
词汇测试卷用来测量被试样本的词汇水平，词汇均为高频词汇，涵盖初中、高中、大学英语应用能力b级(cept-b)、大学英语应用能力a级(cept-a)和大学英语四级(cet-4)的词汇。从大约5000个词汇中选取了120个高频词汇，组成120道试题，其中有34道初中词汇题、25道高中词汇题、31道cept-b词汇题、17道cept-a词汇题、13道cet-4词汇题。采用多题型的方法，即：词汇翻译、单词意义搭配、选择题、填词题。
表1数据表明该词汇测试卷的效度为0.97，具有较高的有效性，可以用来测试综合英语词汇水平。
(三)词汇测试卷的构建
1 单词的选取。词汇是多水平多层次的连续体，本次测试含有五级水平，即初中、高中、大学英语应用能力b级(cept-b)、大学英语应用能力a级(cept-a)和大学英语四级(cet-4)的词汇，并从5000个单词样本中随机抽取了200个高频词汇，而高频词汇的选取是根据教授初中、高中和大学英语教师们的经验，选取的词汇大多为名词、动词和形容词。
2 试卷编制。本次试卷共有四大题型，200道题目，每个题型50小题，每小题0.5分，总分100分。
(1)翻译题：词对词的翻译是一种方便又有效的词汇测试方法。在写作和回忆某个需要的单词时它能够测试学生对某个单词的理解能力(ellis and sinclair，1989，引自sheehan，2003)。
(2)搭配题：英文单词搭配中文含义或英文含义。这种题型主要是用于考察学生使用正确单词含义的能力(ellis and sinclair，1989，引自sheehan，2003)。
(3)选择题：这一题型广泛地应用于各种考试中，它能够测试出学生在某一情境下能否正确运用和认知某个单词的能力(ellis and sinclair，1 989，引自sheehan，2003)。
(4)填词题：也称为c-test，它用于laufer and nation的产出性词汇能力测试(1999)。这一题型能够考查学生是否能正确地拼写单词，是否能用于适当的情景以及知道何时用和不用某个单词(ellis and sinclair，1989，引自sheehan，2003)。
前测实施后，删去了80题，因此最终的词汇测试卷翻译30题，搭配40题，选择40题，填词10题。填词题被证明是最难的一道题，所以删去了大部分，保留了一小部分，因为它能够有效地测试出学生的理解能力。
3 词汇测试前测。200个高频词汇平均分配到了各个题型中。在进行正式测试之前，试卷需要进行前测和分析，以确定这些题目是否恰当，是否太难或是否要修改。2007年3月28日，118名前测组参加了测试，共200道题目，时间为120分钟，满分100分，测试结束后收回了11 8份试卷。
(四)词汇测试卷的再构建
在118名学生参加前测后，笔者对试卷进行了分析并随机采访了一些被试者，删除了部分太难的题目。试卷重组后，仍保留四大题型，留下120题，每题1分，满分120分。2007年4月29日，第二组的129名学生参加了词汇测试，时间60分钟，测试结束后收回了129份试卷，129名学生平均分为73.16分。
三、调查结果与分析
(一)词汇测试结果
从下表2的数据中可以显示每一级词汇的得分情况：
表2数据表明，随着词汇难度的加大，掌握程度随之降低。初中英语词汇量的掌握程度只有74％，这意味着大一新生还有26％的初中词汇没有掌握，同样的，仅有61％的高中词汇被掌握；cept-b、cept-a和cet-4的词汇掌握程度的区别不是很大，造成这一结果现象是由于cept-b、cept-a和cet-4选取的词汇很有限。总的来讲，这一结果表明高职高专大一新生的整体英语词汇水平处于初中和高中阶段。
(二)期末英语考试结果
期末英语考试卷的满分为100分，与词汇测试成绩相比较，期末考试成绩与之很一致。如此高的一致性，说明综合英语能力与词汇量的大小相关。下表显示了期末英语考试成绩与词汇测试成绩之间的相关性比较。
从表4可以看出，期末英语考试和词汇测试的相关性达到了0.78，平方后得到0.61，这个数据表明词汇测试的成绩能够反映期末英语考试中61％学生的成绩，两项测试的一致性程度很高。
laufer在1998年阐明：许多研究者发现词汇量能很好地预测学习者的阅读理解、写作质量的能力，同时也是语言流畅的一个重要组成部分。我们的研究数据也同样表明了词汇量与把阅读和写作作为主要考察项目的综合英语能力测试的相关性很高。
(三)期末英语考试与词汇测试排名的相关性比较
统计数据说明，这两项考试的排名相关性为0.64。根据学生的词汇测试成绩和正态分布下的标准差的比率(文秋芳，2005)，我们把这129名学生分成三个班：好、中、差。同时也按照学生的期末考试成绩进行分班，并把按后者进行的分班看作更加可信，则分错班的学生数如下表所示。
如表5所示，129名学生按照这两次的测试成绩排了名。根据标准差的正态分布，处于+1 sd的范围为68％，因此有87名学生进入中班，在这87名学生中，根据期末考试成绩，有13名学生的词汇成绩排名不在其中；处于+1 sd的范围为16％，则21名学生进入好班，根据期末考试成绩，有3名学生的词汇成绩排名不在其中；处于-1sd的范围为16％，则21名学生进入差班，根据期末考试成绩，有5名学生的词汇成绩排名不在其中。
根据上表，共有21名学生分错了班，比率为17％，108个学生分入适当的班级，比率为83％。这些数据表明按照词汇成绩分班是有一定的风险的，有一部分学生可能会被分错班，那么分班就会产生一些副作用，从而影响他们的学习。
四、讨论
(一)该高职高专院校新生的实际英语词汇水平所处的阶段
从词汇测试的考试结果来看，可以推断该院校的大一新生并没有完全掌握在上大学之前就应该习得的中学词汇。
根据采访调查，主要原因有两个。一是学生自身的问题：一些学生坦言他们讨厌背单词，而且从小也没有养成记忆单词的好习惯，另一些学生直言他们对英语不感兴趣，他们对英语基本知识的了解很贫乏，一些来自农村的学生认为他们没有环境去练习在课堂上学到的词汇，还有的学生说他们进大学是来学技术的，英语对他们没有用，所以他们打算放弃。二是我们现行的教育问题：首先，部分高职高专院校的入学门槛较普通或重点院校要低很多，在招收新生时，英语成绩并没有划定单科成绩录取线，其次，不同地区的初等教育发展是不平衡的。来自农村的学生们说他们那儿的有些老师连发音都带有明显的地方口音，很不标准，这使得他们很羞于开口读英语，以致于不愿意学英语这门课程；最后，当前的英语教学在促进学生学英语的兴趣方面做得不够，教师在课堂上说得过多，而学生却练得太少。
(二)该词汇测试试卷是否能有效地反映学生的英语水平
从总体来看，词汇量越大的学生其英语水平也越高。该词汇试卷以多样化的题型考查了学习者的词汇深度和广度。研究也发现词汇量的深度、广度和其他的语言能力有着密切的关系(如：laufer，1998)。这一发现主要是针对低水平的学习者而言的，他们对语言的掌握程度直接表现在他们对词汇的掌握程度上。因此，在教学中，教师应该关注学生词汇量增加，并且应该把词汇量关注在初中和高中这一层面上，共计2000个单词。在没有完全掌握这2000个单词之前，学习者在大学英语的学习过程中就会遭遇更大的困难。
(三)该词汇试卷是否能有效地用于高职高专院校新生入学分班
alderson等人在1995年阐明，分班测试应基于所在学院教学大纲涉及的方方面面hughes(1989)认为分班测试应根据教学内容，这样不同的学生就能够适应不同的水平。
有些研究者认为，单一的测试是不能全面地考查一个学生的整体学习水平的，分班测试应该对学习者进行一系列的测试(murry，2001)。由于词汇是学习者语言学习的一个关键部分，因此我们把词汇测试作为分班的目的。研究结果表明，我们可以把词汇测试应用于分班考试，但是，如果把所有的学生只分入三个班：好、中、差，则有17％的可能性会把学生分入错误的班级。考虑到分班可能产生的不良后效，必须慎重使用词汇测试作为分班考试依据。
五、结论
1 词汇测试卷的效度为0.97，具有很高的有效性。测试结果显示，大一的学生并没有完全掌握初中和高中的词汇量，而这些词汇本应该在大学人学前就应全部掌握。测试结果还显示cept-a、cept-b和cet-4的词汇掌握程度很低。词汇量太低很可能是造成英语教与学困难的一个主要因素。
2 期末考试成绩和词汇测试的相关系数为0.78，说明词汇测试能够有效地反映学生的整体英语水平。这两次考试的成绩很相似，说明词汇掌握量是英语水平的一个特征，我们可以从学习者的词汇成绩推断出他们的英语水平。

大多数英语教师和研究者认为，初中生的英语学习中存在性别差异现象，通过对富阳镇初中这几年期末考试和中考成绩的分析，发现女生的英语成绩普遍优于男生的成绩。
一、调查目的
性别差异是否存在初中生英语学习中，本文通过问卷调查进行相关研究。笔者希望通过调查，能具体分析差异究竟存在于英语学习的哪些方面，如动机、兴趣、学习方法、学习态度等，从而使广大教师能更好地制定“因性施教”策略，以期提高教学效果。
二、调查对象
笔者选取了富阳镇初中九年级两个班、八年级一个班进行问卷调查。富阳镇初中是一年乡镇初中，生源以就近入学的富阳镇和城北镇为主，入学分数没有限制，学生学习基础差，只有少数学生的入学成绩能达到100分（语文和数学），稍微好一点的学生择校去了县城学校就读。学校根据具体情况设有实验班和普通班，131班、143班是实验班，135班是普通班。参与问卷调查的男女生人数如下：八年级42人（男14人，女28人），九年级67人（男39人，女28人）。
三、调查内容
本研究试图回答以下问题：性别差异是否使初中生的英语学习存在差异？如果有，存在哪些方面的差异？男生优于女生还是女生优于男生？男生和女生英语学习的动机、态度、方法等方面有何不同？
四、调查问卷
（一）问题设置
本问卷有20个问题，每个问题均是单项选择题，要求被调查人每题只选一个答案，问卷结构设计有学习英语的动机；学习英语的态度；学习兴趣；学习方法。
测试前和各班英语教师取得联系后，把时间统一定在周二早读课上，要求教师向学生明确：匿名作答，问卷只用于研究，结果不公布，消除学生的顾虑，要求学生不讨论，独立完成，如实回答（本次调查共发放问卷109份，全部收回，没有无效问卷）。
（二）调查结果分析
1.学习动机
a喜欢老师（男377%，女0%），b为了自己的理想（男3585%，女3571%）， c为了考试（男5660%，女3929%）， d对英语本身感兴趣（男377%，女2500%）。
[分析]从动机上看，因为对英语感兴趣而学习的女生比男生多出了21个百分点；男生为了考试而学习英语的人数比女生略多。兴趣是最好的老师，女生对英语较感兴趣，显然容易学好它。
2.学习态度
（1）在英语学习花费精力方面
a花很多精力（男377%，女0%），b花较少精力（男3396%，女2143%）， c和其他学科同等对待（男2830%，女625%），d应付考试过关就行（男3396%，女714%）。
[分析]男生应付考试和花较少精力的比女生多，而和其他学科同等对待男生比女生少了34个百分点，也就是说，和其他科比较，男生轻视英语科的学习。一分耕耘，一分收获，从这里明显可以看出，女生花在英语上的时间比男生多，因而成绩比男生优秀。
（2）作业完成情况
a独立完成（男943%，女2321%）， b大部分独立完成（男3396%，女3314%）， c一半独立完成（男2264%，女25%），d少部分独立完成（男3396%，女1864%）。
[分析]在完成作业方面，独立完成的女生比男生高出近14个百分点，少部分独立完成的男生比女生又高出15个百分点。由此可知女生完成作业情况比男生要好。
3.学习兴趣
a很浓厚（男566%，女1428%），b一般（6611%，女7857%），c没有兴趣（男2830%，女714%）。
[分析]初中女生对英语有浓厚兴趣的比例高，男生对英语没有兴趣的比例明显高于女生。
4.学习方法的注重点
a多课外积累（男943%，女536%），b专心听课，按教师的要求去学习（男4340%，女4643%），c复习重点语法、词组和句型，多做习题，多背多读（男2512%，女3751%），d考试突击（男2264%，女1071%）。
